Meet Winston McWhirt, LMHCA...
Therapeutic Approach & Philosophy
My approach to therapy is existential, based on the direct experiences and processes of meaning making each of us have that make up how we go through the world. I believe that the therapeutic relationship itself is the best tool for healing. In session I focus on creating a safe and engaging space where you can feel heard and connect authentically with another person as well as yourself with intention to begin the process of healing. I utilize humanist modalities, somatic experiencing techniques, mindfulness practices and cognitive behavioral therapy principles to provide personalized therapy guided by each client’s unique experience and pace. I also use non-directive play therapy for younger clients who express needs and engage in their process of healing through play.
I enjoy working with adults experiencing mood disorders, anxiety, grief/loss, anger, and life transitions. I also work with children and adolescents aged 5 and up addressing trauma, anxiety, social acclimation, self-esteem, grief/loss, anger, and life transitions. Much of my training and background is in working with children and young adults on the autism spectrum and am excited to continue working with people of neurodiverse backgrounds and experience. I am LGBTQ+ and trans affirming.
Experience, Education, Licenses and Certifications
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in Washington State and have a Masters of Arts in Psychology from Seattle University where I studied existential phenomenological therapy. I have experience working with children with moderate to severe behavioral concerns as well as with children and young adults on the autism spectrum working on social and emotional goals.
